Why Black Friday Requires a Strategy

Black Friday has grown from a single-day sale into a weeks-long marketing event. The sheer volume of "deals" makes it genuinely difficult to identify real savings. Research has shown that many products are marked up in the weeks before Black Friday only to be "discounted" back to their normal price — or even less of a deal than other times of year.

That doesn't mean there aren't real bargains to be had. It means you need to be prepared.

Before Black Friday: The Preparation Phase

  1. Build your wishlist early. Decide what you want to buy before the sale starts. Impulse purchases are where overspending happens.
  2. Track prices in advance. Use price history tools to log current prices in October. This gives you a genuine baseline for comparison.
  3. Set a budget. Know your total spend limit before you see a single deal.
  4. Sign up to retailer newsletters. Early access deals are frequently emailed to subscribers.
  5. Check cashback rates. Some platforms boost cashback rates specifically for Black Friday — activate these before shopping.

During the Sale: What to Watch For

  • Price history checks: Before buying, verify the "original" price is genuine. Browser extensions or dedicated comparison sites can show historical pricing.
  • Countdown timers: Artificial urgency is a sales tactic. If the deal is real, it won't disappear in 10 minutes permanently.
  • Bundle deals: Sometimes retailers bundle a desired product with unwanted accessories to inflate perceived value. Make sure you actually want the bundle.
  • Specifications: Some "deals" involve older model numbers or reduced-spec versions of popular products. Compare model numbers carefully.

Product Categories Worth Watching

Certain categories have historically offered genuine reductions during Black Friday:

  • Consumer electronics (TVs, laptops, headphones)
  • Home appliances
  • Bedding and homeware
  • Clothing and footwear from mid-range retailers
  • Subscription services (streaming, software, gym memberships)

After Black Friday: January Sales and Cyber Monday

If you missed a deal, don't panic. Cyber Monday (the Monday after Black Friday) often features strong discounts on tech specifically. January sales — starting just after Christmas — are another excellent opportunity, particularly for homewares, furniture, and fashion.

The key insight is that Black Friday is no longer the only major sales event of the year. Patience is a deal-hunter's best tool.
